Daniel W. Chester papers, 1853-1919; bulk: 1853-1883.

Papers of a sea captain consist primarily of letters between him and his wife, papers relating to the ship Dauntless, of which Chester was captain, and a certificate of non-liability exempting Chester from conscription in the Civil War. The correspondence includes letters between Chester and his daughter Lizzie, and comment on his grief over the deaths of several of his children and his deep religious faith.
